With 4 New Zealand Music Awards – Single of The Year, Best Solo Artist, Best Breakthrough Artist and Best Pop Artist already in her bag in 2019, Stella Rose Bennett professionally known as Benee, has arrived! An epitome of a breakout star, she has delivered one of the most stunning debut of recent times.
Blessed to be born in “really musical” family where her parents exposed her to the music of Radiohead, Björk and Groove Armada at a very early stage, Benee began her journey with guitar and saxophone classes when she was only eight. By the time she was in the final years of her high school, she was uploading covers in Soundcloud and also making her own music.
With the help of Josh Fountain, a producer and member of the band Leisure, she released her debut single “Tough Guy” in 2017. However, the 19-year-old pop visionary started drawing a lot of attention once her follow up 2018 single “Soaked” was released. It streamed over 20 million times and got her the first career entry on the Triple J Hottest 100 2018.
Her debut EP Fire on Marzz released in June 2019 peaked at #13 on the New Zealand Albums Chart and at #75 on the Australian Albums Chart. Her new singles “Supalonely” and “Glitter” from the follow-up EP, Stella & Steve released in November 2019 went viral in TikTok as dance challenges leading to an international success. With all that success coming up in such a short time, her moody and distinctive expressions prove that Benee is definitely someone to watch out for.
